Watching TV Your Way

The TV viewing experience is changing, driven by the current generation’s rebellion against authority.   NBC Executives might want us to watch Must See TV on Thursday but I choose only to watch it on Saturday Mornings.  I still want to watch high quality TV, but only when it is convenient for me.  Technology has helped fuel this life style choice.

First was the DVR.  With the ability to record 2 shows at once and save over a 100 hours of footage,  we were no longer chained to our TV’s Schedules.  It is now possible to converse with your unemployed / stoned friends about what happened on PTI yesterday.

Then came the slingbox which let us watch LSU Baseball games on our mobile device while being stuck in traffic.  We were no longer chained to our TVs.

Once Hulu came along, especially Hulu Plus, the need for a Slingbox and Cable itself started to wane.  Thrown in iTunes and NetFlix and the only thing that you can’t due is watch live sporting events in your home*.  Since I watch most sporting events at Bars/The Venue/Friend’s Houses,  this is not a concern for me,  it will be for others.

Now with Roku and Apple TV, we can easily stream our content back onto our TVs. If I want to watch the entire series of Battlestar Galatica, I don’t need to buy / rent DVDS, I can just spool them up on my TV through the Roku’s ability to play Hulu Plus.

COSTS

Roku = 99.99

Apple TV = 99.99

SlingBox (HBO and Sports) =  179.99

Hulu Plus = 7.99 a Month

So it costs $280 initial costs, plus $9.99 a month for my solution.  However,  you will be saving around $80 a month with this solution so you should start seeing savings during the fourth month.  I did not include the cost of internet in this, because I assume everyone has internet anyway.

First Year Savings:  $640

Second Year Plus: $960

Tip:  You still need one friend with an extra set box who has a great cable package.

* You can watch sporting events with the Slingbox but there is around a  10 second delay.  This is a problem when watching the NFC championship and you can  hear the entire city cheer before you see the play.

Jodix Free Ipod Converter

I have a lot of files in the avi format that I want to watch on my iphone and ipod touch.  Most of these are DVDs that I ripped to my computer.  I need to convert them to an ipod format like mp4.  I had purchased a Xilisoft product to do this but it had expired and was not that great.  Before buying the newest version,  I downloaded Jodix Free Ipod Converter.  Its perfect.  It keeps the audio and video together and takes up few system resources.  It is also free.

Designated driver service to start

This is from the Daily Report today

A new service that will drive South Baton Rouge partygoers home safely is scheduled to start in the next week. Zingo Designated Drivers will arrive at local bars and restaurants on folding motorbikes, then for $20 drive tipsy patrons home in their own vehicle, with the scooters folded up in the trunk. After they take the customers home, the Zingo drivers will unfold the motorbike and leave. Mitch Poche, who is starting the local business with Tommy Spinosa III, says there are similar operations in cities such as Atlanta, Dallas and Orlando, Fla. "This is a responsible decision for people to use," Poche says. "This isn't going to be a drunk wagon so people can drink until they black out." Baton Rouge is a party town, with not a lot of public transportation options, so Poche says he thinks Zingo can fill a niche. The motorbikes can only go about 35 mph, so the company will have a limited service area that includes Perkins Road and Tigerland bars. Zingo will start with five drivers, but Poche hopes to have as many as 10 in the next few months. --Timothy Boone

I hope you have a big trunk because I am going to put my bike in it!

The Killers

Saw the Killers on Saturday at the River Center.  They were wonderful live and played a good mix from Sam's Town and Hot Fuss.  They did end the show with All These Things That I Have Done, which is my favorite song.  Anywho, had a great time with some new special guest stars and ended staying out way past my bed time.  I did not protect the run and was only able to do 10 miles on Sunday.

Meltdown IV: Tbone Bone is back baby!!!

Well, my IPOD broke yesterday on the way to New Orleans.  I started to go crazy again and then Clark called me up and told me that he got three field passes to the Saints / Falcons Monday night opener.  The first game in the dome since Katrina with U2 and Green Day are opening up the show and we will be on the Field!!!.  Was the entire week of crap worth it?

Yes,Yes it was.   I also have an execuse to buy th new video ipod.
